"The secret to success is to know something nobody else knows"

"The secret to success is to know something nobody else knows"

-- Aristotle Onassis

Aristotle Onassis was a Greek shipping magnate who at one time was one of the wealthiest men in the world and who amassed the worlds' largest privately owned shipping fleet. He was also well known for being successful in numerous ventures outside of shipping. One of his greatest successes was signing long term leases with the major oil companies for his oil tankers. Even in the times the oil companies did not need the tankers, they were paying full price for them. He clearly knew and/or believed things which other people didn’t know.

There are many times you feel the pain of your employee turnover and simply do not know what to do. You have people in your organization telling you innumerable different “solutions”. You also have third parties from outside the organization who are also telling what they think.

You don’t know what or who to believe.

The question to ask is simple. Which of these people have a lengthy track record of reducing employee turnover? The answer is few if any. This is not a matter of people knowing anything that no one else knows. They are guessing and generally guessing from a personal agenda. Just as Mr. Onassis had a lengthy track record of success, you also need someone who can lean on their experience with a wide variety of industries, companies and situations.

One of the most common and easiest to solve problems which I see is Chronically Open Positions. Anything which can be done to reduce turnover immediately helps in reducing your open positions. The main issue I have found in this area is most organizations are not successful in recruiting and selecting. They don’t know the sources, the mediums, the tactics, the target or how to judge success in this area. Therefore, they end up with open positions which they are constantly recruiting for with little success.

Success breeds success

Many a CEO or Business Owner are flabbergasted when they see how easy it is to solve this problem. The immediacy of the results are also amazing to them. It is simply a case of knowing something other people do not know.
